Scanned PDF vs selectable text
A PDF can look like a document of words and still contain only pictures of pages. That difference decides whetherPDF to Word on this site can help — and why it refuses scans without OCR.
How to tell text from a scan
Open the PDF in any reader (Preview, Chrome, Acrobat, and similar). Try to select a word with the cursor and copy it into a text editor.
- Selectable text — you can highlight words, and pasted text is real characters. The file stores a text layer the converter can read.
- Scan / image-only — the cursor cannot select words, or “copy” produces nothing useful. Each page is essentially a photo of paper.
Why it can look like text but still be images
Phone scans, flatbed scans, and “print to PDF” from some apps store a bitmap of each page. The letters look sharp on screen, but the PDF has no character data — only pixels. Search, copy, and text-based conversion all fail for the same reason: there is nothing to extract except the picture.
Why PDF to Word without OCR cannot recover a scan
Optical character recognition (OCR) guesses letters from pixels. This site’s PDF to Word tool does not run OCR. It reads text that is already in the PDF. If every page is an image, conversion stops and explains that OCR would be required. Pretending otherwise would produce an empty or useless Word file.
A quick check before you convert
- Open the PDF in your usual reader.
- Try to select a sentence on the first page and copy it.
- If the paste looks correct, the file likely has selectable text and is a candidate for this converter.
- If nothing selects, use an OCR tool elsewhere first — or keep the PDF as images. This site will not invent text from the scan.
Mixed files exist: some pages text, some scanned. This tool converts pages with text and marks scanned pages in the Word document instead of silently inventing content.
What this site’s PDF to Word can and cannot do
It can:
- Build an editable DOCX from selectable PDF text in your browser.
- Infer headings, lists, tables, and links when the PDF structure makes them recognizable.
It cannot:
- Run OCR on scanned or image-only PDFs.
- Preserve layout faithfully — fonts, images, columns, spacing, and tables may differ. Columns are read in sequence, not kept side by side. Images are not copied into the Word file.
- Open password-protected or encrypted PDFs.
Limits: 75 MB and 200 pages. Processing stays on your device.
